Dental Milestones
at Every Age

From baby gums to teenage braces — what to expect and how to care for your child's teeth at each stage of development.

0–3 Years

Baby & Toddler 👶

The most critical foundation years for lifelong dental health.

🦷 What's Happening

  • First tooth typically erupts at 6–10 months
  • 20 primary teeth erupt by age 3
  • Teething begins — drooling, irritability, swollen gums
  • First dental visit should be by age 1

🪥 Dental Care Tips

  • Wipe gums with soft damp cloth from birth
  • Use a soft baby toothbrush once first tooth appears
  • No toothpaste until age 2; water only before that
  • Never put baby to sleep with a bottle of juice or milk

⚠️ Watch Out For

  • Bottle caries (decay from prolonged bottle feeding)
  • Dark spots or white chalky patches on teeth
  • Delayed eruption beyond 18 months
3–6 Years

Pre-Schooler 🧒

Building habits and introducing independence in oral care.

🦷 What's Happening

  • All 20 primary teeth should now be present
  • Jaw grows to accommodate future permanent teeth
  • Speech and chewing fully dependent on teeth
  • Children begin learning to brush themselves

🪥 Dental Care Tips

  • Pea-sized fluoride toothpaste twice daily
  • Parent still needs to brush and supervise
  • Introduce flossing when teeth are touching
  • Limit sugary snacks and juice

⚠️ Watch Out For

  • Thumb sucking (address if continuing vigorously)
  • Mouth breathing — affects jaw development
  • Early tooth decay between back teeth
6–12 Years

School Age (Elementary) 📚

The mixed dentition phase — baby teeth falling out, permanent teeth arriving.

🦷 What's Happening

  • First permanent molars erupt around age 6
  • Baby teeth begin falling out from age 6–7
  • Mixed dentition phase (both baby + permanent teeth)
  • Orthodontic assessment recommended at age 7

🪥 Dental Care Tips

  • Sealants on first permanent molars (age 6–7)
  • Regular fluoride treatment every 6 months
  • Supervise brushing until age 8–9
  • Wear mouthguard for contact sports

⚠️ Watch Out For

  • Crowded or crooked permanent teeth emerging
  • Delayed loss of baby teeth
  • Bite problems — underbite, overbite, crossbite
10–16 Years

Pre-Teen & Teen 🎓

The final phase of dental development — and often when orthodontic treatment begins.

🦷 What's Happening

  • Most permanent teeth have erupted
  • Second permanent molars arrive around age 12
  • Wisdom teeth may begin forming
  • Orthodontic treatment most effective now

🪥 Dental Care Tips

  • Daily flossing is essential (especially with braces)
  • Reduce sugary drinks — sodas, energy drinks
  • Wear mouthguard for sports
  • Consider sealants on second permanent molars

⚠️ Watch Out For

  • Gum disease from poor brushing (especially with braces)
  • Increased cavity risk from sugary teen diet
  • Wisdom tooth eruption issues
